Moderne Burger

I had to go get my haircut today and I had every intention of trying out Splitz Grill. Besides, Splitz was only 10 blocks away from where I get my haircut on Main Street. But while I was waiting for my turn, I was reading the Georgia Straight and there was an article on solo dining. Hey! That's what I was going to do today! As I read on, there were some great ideas where to go if you were dining alone. On a side note, I'm not the best at dining alone, I feel all... well... alone. Must be a deep-rooted psychological thing. Anyways, as I read further through the article, it stated that Moderne Burger is a great place to dine solo. Mmmmm... Moderne Burger... (in a Homer-esque kind of way). My
favourite burger joint in the GVRD.

Like a moth to a flame, like a Richmond driver to an accident - I was drawn to Broadway and Larch. I subconsciously drove and ended up right in front of Moderne Burger. Literally... I got a parking space right in front! It's like this was meant to be. So what draws me to Moderne Burger? Sure, there are a lot of good burger joints in the GVRD: Vera's, Burger Heaven, Fatburger, Splitz, Burgers Etc., Hamburger Mary's, Red Onion to name a few. I know that Vancouver is not known for it's wide selection of great diners that serve great burgers; however, Moderne Burger is a very good attempt at it. They use only fresh beef, in it's purest state with nothing else in it.

I didn't even look at the menu and ordered the Cheeseburger Platter (the menu only has burgers). The amount of fries that comes with the platter can feed 2 people easily. So if you're dining with someone else, do not order 2 platters. One platter and a separate single burger should supply you with enough fries to keep both people happy. I didn't order a milkshake this time; but what I can remember, it is pretty respectable. I was told to eat the burger upside down, so that it wouldn't spill all over the place. I've tried this before without much success. This time, it helped keep the burger in one piece; but it still was a messy affair. However, the messiness is what makes the burger absolutely delicious. The burger patty bursts with beef flavour, being juicy and moist. I love the bun they use at Moderne Burger. It's the right combination of soft and chewy. It's hard to explain, but compared to Burgers Etc., the bun tastes more "cooked". The bun at Burgers Etc. seemed "raw". The massive amount of fries that accompanied the burger were really good. The best way to describe them is that they are a better version of White Spot fries. They are fresh cut, but fried just enough to be crispy. Inside, the potato is tender; yet not mushy. Despite what others have said, the service here is personable and efficient. I also felt very comfortable eating alone (gasp!). Only problem is that if you have more then 4 people, you won't be able to sit together.

The Good:
- Everything is fresh: beef, veggies, fries etc...
- Cool retro decor
- Burger is just excellent

The Bad:
- If you start to add a lot of toppings, it can get pricey
- No tables for 4+

I pass by Moderne Burger everytime I go to Bikrams for yoga...and I feel guilty about getting a burger right after my session....haha.

I used to hold my burger "upside down" and friends pointed it out. I don't think there's a right side up way to eat burgers, as long as you eat it!

Will have to go...been meaning to go, same thing with Burgers Etc...

Yes, some people laugh at me when I whine about dining alone. They don't understand, especially when you're eating alone and snapping photos. People start staring at you like you're strange.

Hey Sherman,

I was in a discussion with a bunch of food critics yesterday. They said in Vancouver, they ranked Moderne Burger quite highly. However, they said that DB Bistro's burger (with truffles) was also on top of their list. Have you tried DB Bistro's burger yet? Any good?

Hi Anson, you know what? DB Bistro is on my list for a future visit. Yes, I've heard about that burger and you know I will try it! Thanks for the info!
