Sherman's Food Adventures: E`s Up Dining

E`s Up Dining

Last week, after eating some really good pasta at Pico Bello, I went over to Kennedy Heights to get some money from CIBC. As I was there, I noticed a tiny restaurant around the corner from Desi Junction. I noticed it for a few reasons. First, there was a blinking "open" sign in the front. Yes, I'm a sucker for shiny things. Second, it looked so odd, I was intrigued by it. I thought to myself, "Should I go try it???" Well, a few days ago, a fellow Foodbuzz member left a message for me to try E's Up. Okay, fine, I will try it today! I had to go to the CIBC to get some cash before I went to eat. Just as I was leaving, one of the bank's employees tried to sign me up for a Visa Infinite card. I told him I already had one; but that didn't really seem like a good enough answer to him. What do I have to do? Whip it out and show you? I really can't stand pushy people.

A bit flustered, I walked into E's Up Dining and was welcomed by a very friendly lady. Apparently, the restaurant is named after her. Yes, her name is "E". Her parents named the kids alphabetically. I would've hated it if I was named "P" for obvious reasons... Anyways, the special of the day was a Homemade Beef Dip with choice of pan fries, salad or vegetable soup for $5.00. Yes, it was $5.00! I chose the salad instead of the fries because I knew we were going to Red Robin tonight for my son's birthday. If you've ever looked at the Red Robin menu, everything is brown in colour (the deep fryer is their best friend). The salad was fresh and E drizzled some sun dried tomato dressing on top. It was pleasant to eat. The beef dip was very good, despite not impressing visually. There was real roast beef bathed in garlic butter nestled in a soft bun. Moreover, the au jus was made from scratch and it was fabulous. No powdered crap here.

E's Up Dining also does catering and in fact, they were catering for the mayor of Surrey. That was the reason why they had fresh roast beef. E explained that she normally doesn't make beef dip because the meat wouldn't sell fast enough (which would compromise freshness). I was impressed that everything they make at the restaurant is from scratch. It's definitely a pleasant surprise for a little non-descript place. If you are in the area, do not hesitate to try them out.

The Good:
- Good food made from scratch
- Very friendly owner and staff
- Inexpensive

The Bad:
- The outside hides what it looks like inside
- Limited menu (but I guess it's to keep things fresh)

Yes, not really close for you. In fact, if I didn't work out here, I wouldn't drive out here either... LOL...

I had a friend in elementary school who's last name was Yip, and we always asked him how to spell his last name.

Man, that really sounds like a deal. Too bad it is that far, as any savings from the menu would be cancelled by the drive there. Still, I am willing to give it a try...

That's funny Art...

Kim, yes, it is far for most people. But if you are in the neighbourhood, it's worth a try. I wouldn't drive out there on purpose though.

I have done my share of driving around solely for food - like once from Downtown Vancouver to White Rock (~50Km) just for fish and chips. In the end, they were OK, helped mostly by the tartar sauce. But, given E's schedule, I will find it a bit difficult...

I just moved into the Delta area and decided to give E's a try after reading your review. It was very very good - I had the eggs benny and it was excellent, best hollandaise sauce I've ever had. Interestingly, it came with a salad and the dressing was fantastic, seriously delicious. I think it was some type of creamy dill, and it was definitely homemade. My meal also came with pan fried potatoes, for $7. Another diner who frequents the place regularly, insisted on treating me to dessert which I thought was very sweet. All in all, a great dining experience and I'll definitely be going back. Thanks Sherman!

Thanks Sicilian Girl!

Yes, I was quite surprised at the quality of food they serve at E's. It qualifies as a hidden gem in my books.

I tried this place, thanks to your review. I just wouldn't have ventured into it because of what it looks like outside, which is a shame. It's clear you are a more adventurous eater than I am =)

As it is I live around the corner from here, and have only ventured in here in July, while I read your review back in May!

The food is amazing, flavourful and all cooked from scratch. That homemade flavour comes through.

This place is a great value, and is much better than going to the Keg or something.

It's welcoming once you are inside, it's more spacious than from the outside, and they have decorated it.

The owners are welcoming and generous, and the food speaks for itself, it's fresh and amazing.

I don't get impressed that easily but I am impressed by this place. The people here cook with soul. It sort of reminded me of Boonie's Soul Food over in Cloverdale.

For the person who was debating whether to drive here, I would say yes, it is something different to try just because of the homemade aspect.

They also take good care of you, and really include all the trimmings with the meal.

I really hope the traffic picks up for this place, it is a neighbourhood gem even though locals seem to not have discovered it yet.

Also at the prices they charge, we will be returning here often, it's much easier than cooking ourselves.

I was thre on Tuesday June 12, 2012. The menu was good, the prices fabulous. I ordered a sandwich with soup, had choice of soup, salad or fries. I didn't like the soup and didn't eat much of it but the waitress apologixed and took about 30% off my bill. The sandwich by the way was perfectly cooked and delicious. The place was clean and the decor homey and had lots of nice china here and there and interesting art work on the walls.
I would go there again in a heartbeat even though it's about 15 km. away from where I live.
If you want to try it out, go soon because they are closing at the end of August. :(
