Ming Shing

Don't get me wrong, I really love all types of Indian food; but lately it's been a little too much of a good thing. I really needed to eat something different. Believe it or not something different in North Delta/Surrey would be Chinese food. I know, I know, in Vancouver, you couldn't go a few blocks without running into a Chinese restaurant. However, in North Delta, the number of Chinese restaurants are in single digits. I've been to all of them along Scott Road, except for one - Ming Shing Restaurant. When out here in North Delta, you need to approach a Chinese restaurant with both realistic expectations and some caution. Lack of competition usually leads to mediocrity.

As expected, the restaurant is a modest operation which is family-run. There were some lunch specials for $6.50; but I decided to go for regular menu instead. I decided to order 2 things that are unmistakeably Chinese - Preserved Egg & Marinated Pork Congee and Salted Fish & Chicken Fried Rice. I did this for 2 reasons. First, I really like both of the items. Second, why not see if they can actually cook real Chinese food. I'm sure they can do Sweet & Sour Pork and Broccoli Beef. I didn't try their wontons because frankly it wasn't in their name. I only give restaurants a hard time with their wontons, if they put it in their name and they are no good.

The congee will never be confused with Congee Noodle King. It's definitely home style where it is light-tasting and not really all that thick. The marinated pork was not all that flavourful compared to an actual salted pork. Congee wasn't bad; but I wouldn't order it next time. However, the fried rice was excellent. The rice was firm and it was fried up properly. It wasn't oily either. There was plenty of egg, chicken and salted fish to flavour the rice as it should. This dish tasted exactly how it should be - salty in a fishy way. This was a bit of a surprise; but a nice one at that.

Obviously it's difficult to judge a restaurant after only trying 2 dishes. Yet, of the 2, one was average and the other was very good. That means it warrants another visit. I still think Lotus is still the best Chinese restaurant on Scott Road. However, Ming Shing is a decent choice if you didn't want to travel 17 blocks.

The Good:
- Friendly staff
- Good selection of dishes

The Bad:
- Food is so-so
- Some items are a bit pricey for this type of restaurant
- Lack of parking

Business Hours:
11:00am - 10:00pm (Tue - Sat)
