Sushi Oyama

By virtue of having a late lunch, we weren't hungry until around 8:30pm. By then, you start to run out of dining options, especially out in Burnaby. I did a little Internet reading and came across Nathan's which is in the oddest of locations. It's behind the soccer fields at 8 Rinks. Unfortunately for us, there was a UFC fight night and the place was packed. Now without a backup plan, we were a bit lost as to where to eat. No fear, I whipped out my Blackberry and went to Kim's blog (I'm Only Here for the Food!) and found my destination - Sushi Oyama. Yes, the best way to get ideas is from other bloggers! We were lucky to arrive before last call. Sushi Oyama is located in an old mansion which used to house a few different restaurants including the last one which was Korean. Heading up to the entrance, I was really impressed with the semi-outdoor seating around the promenade around the house. I also noticed that they did extensive renovations as they knocked down some walls to create a more uniform dining space. We were greeted kindly by the staff and I was seriously impressed at our server. She was busily sweeping the floor; but before she came to take our order, she washed up first. These small little things are actually quite important in terms of cleanliness.

We started with the Tako Yaki (Octopus Balls) first and they were very soft and fluffy. There was just the right amount of sauce; thus it didn't overpower the delicateness of the dish. Arriving while we were still munching on the Tako Yaki was the 9 pc Salmon Sashimi. You might not be able to tell from the picture, but the slices of sashimi were very thick and large. Moreover, the salmon was fresh, sweet and not mushy. Only minor problem was the remnant of the salmon skin. To my amazement, on the menu, there was a Filet-O-Fish roll. If you know my love of Filet-O-Fish, then you will also know that I needed to order this even if it wasn't good. Well, it was pretty good. The fish was fried up really crispy and added a nice texture contrast to the rice. Arriving on the same plate was the Spicy Scallop Roll and it was spiiiicy! We like spicy, so we enjoyed it, but for some it might be overkill. The last item we ordered was the House Roll and it looked like quite standard; however, there was only a very thin layer of rice on the outside. I really like the fact there was more filling than rice.

For all the food we ordered, it only cost us $23.90 before tax and tip. If you take into account the food quality, ambiance, cleanliness and service, the meal was a fantastic value. I'm not even sure why people line up at Sushi Garden. They really should just take a walk up the street and dine at Sushi Oyama instead. Moreover, how can you not like a place that has a Filet-O-Fish roll???

The Good:
- Food was tasty and well-portioned
- Spacious and clean restaurant
- Reasonable prices
- Friendly service

The Bad:
- Minor problem: they should have trimmed the sashimi more carefully

Thanks for the plug! XD

After my visit and driving by Metrotown, I am still bewildered as to why people keep on going to Sushi Garden. Now, not that it is not bad, just that, well, there are other options people! And just as good and cheaper and you don't have to wait in line!!! Oh, well...

Thanks Sherman for the location update.

I drive by this location all the time. The last time I visited here, it was the previous previous restaurant called Johnson House, Korean BBQ. I asked about the history of the location. Some random customer told me that the house was once a funeral home/morgue!!! I don't think I ever gone back since...LOL, but as long as the food is deadly, and it doesn't rot, who cares!

Cheers,
Anson

Hi Kim, yes, I agree, why line up when you can have better a few blocks up the street?

Hi Anson, !!! A morgue! I didn't know that. Meh, that won't prevent me from going... It's hard to stop me from eating... LOL!

I agree, there are other options to Sushi Garden which is overhyped. I think it's the group mentality. If there's a line up, it must be good.

The salmon sashimi looks awesome and I want to try the filet of fish roll too as it is also one of my favourites from Mcd's. Prices are reasonable too. You can't beat dining in an old mansion for atmosphere either.

This is on my to try list. Thanks.

I gave Sushi Oyama a try today and must say I wasn't blown away by it. While the portions are huge (tuna/salmon sashimi), overall it was just ok.

I can still go to Sakura Sushi in Richmond and get wild salmon and tuna which is always fresh and well prepared.

If you prefer quantity over quality, then this is the place for you.

I find most korean owned sushi places, while they don't skimp on the quality, the precise cutting technique and sushi rice is not as good.

Extra points for free parking and nice environment.

Holly, I would agree with your comments especially the cutting of the sashimi. As you may have noticed, the remnants of salmon skin on the sashimi is a no-no.

Sherman we went after reading your review. You were right, this was a great sushi place and the prices were better then our regular place. Great find!

I'm glad you liked it Kristina. I know you have great taste when it comes to sushi and if you liked it, then it's validation!

Thanks for the review on this place, Sherman. You started us going there and we've been going every Friday night for almost a year now and still love it. They must have hired a different sashimi guy though - we've never had skin left on our salmon.
Never could see the appeal of Sushi Garden - the staff is so unfriendly and I wasn't all that impressed with the food.
I do like Tomoya but I prefer the atmosphere of Sushi Oyama.

Thanks Claire! Yes, I think Sushi Oyama is a great value. I know it's not Japanese-run, but that doesn't matter to me in this case. Tomoya is good too, but I find that their non-sushi items to be quite average and exspensive.

I go to Sushi Oyama fairly often (every other week or so, since they opened - they know my family fairly well now because we all live nearby). It seems to me like they pay attention to these reviews and really try to improve on their service, food, and anything they can. It is rare to find such a beautiful place to sit and enjoy a meal at more-than-reasonable prices, and while they still have things to work on, they've done very well at making the service and food live up to the atmosphere. :)

Sherman I brought my girl friend there on a catch up date on Saturday night based on your review - we loved it. The waitress made great recommendations and the setting was lovely and cozy - a nicer atmosphere than I would have expected for the menu prices. Among other things, we got the Awesome Roll and the Red Dragon Roll - fantastic flavour combos even in the form of leftovers the next day.

This one is definitely going to be a regular for me.

Definitely one of the best values around. Some people think the food is average. For me, considering the prices and location (old funeral home... LOL), it's good enough for me!
