Chong Lee Market

The Banh Mi is such a versatile food item. Think of it. Much like a sandwich, it is portable and accessible. Unlike a sandwich, the Banh Mi has remained relatively inexpensive. It's true. The humble sandwich has been elevated to "gourmet food" status which ultimately means $10.00+ for one is the norm. Look at places like the Dirty Apron, Meat & Bread and Big Lou's. Now I'm not slagging those places; rather, I believe that their sandwiches are worth the price they charge. They are delicious, unique and generally a decent size. However, when we look at a Vietnamese sub, it is also delicious, unique and decent in size. The one thing that sets it apart is the price (oh and the ambiance as well I guess). You can get one for around $3.00 - $3.75, which is substantially less expensive than not only gourmet sandwiches, it is cheaper than most sandwiches period (think Subway, Sandwich Tree, Skyway etc...). In terms of versatility, the Banh Mi is more than a quick lunch or even dinner (eat more than one), it can be a snack or even breakfast. In all honesty, whenever I need a quick bite, I stop by a Banh Mi shop. Much better than McD's or a bag of chips.

That was partially the reason I stopped by Chong Lee Market. I was in need of a snack and Viv was in need of lunch. Generally, I'm not that fond of parking at Chong Lee since the lot is not exactly user-friendly. The spaces are only suitable for a Honda Fit. Whatever, I found a space and besides, it wasn't the first Tuesday of the month (it gets crazy in there!). I decided to get 3 subs - Special, Cold Cut and Meatball. Honestly, there is not much difference between the Special and Cold Cut. Both seemed to have nearly the same types of meat, pate and other ingredients. Whatever the case, both were pretty decent. The bread (which appears to be supplied by Ba Le) was crunchy and not too heavy. There was a strong pate and Maggi sauce taste which gave plenty of flavour. As for the Meatball, it was not as flavourful as I would've liked, it could've used more onions. Yet again, it was also decent where the meat was moist and not too fatty. Hey, not the best Banh Mi I've had; yet it did the job. Hey! And it wasn't on Kingsway either!

The Good:
- There is parking, albeit dangerous for the health of your car doors
- Inexpensive

The Bad:
- As mentioned, your car is in the line of fire in this parking lot
- Banh is okay; but there is better

Whole Foods (Cambie)

"So when are we having Thanksgiving Dinner?" queried my mom earlier this week. Well, I was thinking of Thanksgiving Day itself, but my plans suddenly changed. Why? In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I received at $100.00 gift card from Whole Foods. Apparently, they wanted me to try their products, specifically items related to Thanksgiving. Well, they didn't have to ask me twice! Synonymous with high-quality natural and organic products, Whole Foods is one of the most socially responsible companies in North America. For me, I haven't had much of a chance to shop at Whole Foods since I don't live near any of their GVRD locations. In my mind, I categorize it within the same group such as Urban Fare and Meinhardt. However, on a more in-depth look at the store, it is obvious that Whole Foods is larger and has more choice. However, there is no denying that Whole Foods is not exactly a cheap place to shop at. As the ol' adage says: "you pay for what you get". If your budget allows for it, the stuff at Whole Foods is all about quality.

So on a weeknight, I made my attempt at doing a traditional turkey dinner with all the fixins'. Yup, it was ambitious, but I had help. For those who are a bit too busy to do everything themselves, there are pre-constructed dinners that can be ordered online for pickup within 48 hours. The 2- day advanced notice is so that they can brine the turkey. For me, I merely picked up a JD Farms fresh turkey and 4 prepared sides and some gravy. Of the 4 sides, the most interesting was the Maple-Glazed Brussel Sprouts because none of us actually like brussel sprouts. But what the hey, I've had some versions that I haven't minded and these did look good. They were slow roasted with shallots and glazed with maple syrup topped with pine nuts. We liked that they undercooked the sprouts. This prevented them from going mushy when reheated. However, they were a touch too sweet for our liking. The one surprising side was the Roasted Winter Squash. Normally, it is a mild and sweet dish, but this one came with a considerable kick. In fact, it was fun watching everyone's reaction. I was quite happy with the spice level because it totally livened up the nicely textured squash.

Moving onto a turkey dinner necessity, we had the Mash Potatoes. Personally, I love when the skin is left on and this was the case here. This was more of a potatoey mash rather than creamy (although there was heavy cream in it). It went well with the turkey gravy which was quite mild and tasted very natural. Of course any Thanksgiving dinner isn't complete without stuffing. In this case, it was a Fruit and Herb Stuffing with apples, cranberries, nuts, carrots, celery and onions. With large pieces of moist bread, this was yet again another fresh and natural tasting item. I guess it helps that it didn't come out of a box eh? Loved the addition of fruit to the mix that added sweetness to the savoury elements. It was not over-seasoned nor over-moistened, so it crisped up nicely in the oven. Lastly, as I walked past the bakery section in the store, I couldn't resist and picked up a small Pumpkin Pie. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin. I do like carving them, but eating, not so much. With that being said, I looked at the pie objectively and came to the conclusion that the crust was flaky and light while the filling was well-spiced and smooth in texture. A good pumpkin pie... for those who like pumpkin pie!

Normally, I would make a turkey dinner from scratch and wouldn't bother picking up prepared food. However, I can see the value of this option, especially for those who are busy or don't want to go through the trouble. Besides, the stuff at Whole Foods is top-notch (and I didn't need to blog about it for people to already know this) and fresh. And no, I am not saying this based on my comped turkey dinner either. I actually spent over the $100.00 by $40.00 (although I did buy a whole turkey and some cooked items to go). But one thing is clear, if you got the cash, Whole Foods has some pretty good stuff.

If you're into food, you are aware that good food can be found in the strangest of places. By virtue of reading this post right now, I'm assuming you are definitely into food! Take Pizzeria Farina for example. It is located in the infamous Cobalt Hotel. Not a place we'd necessarily associate with good Neapolitan pizza. Rather than thin crust, there used to be thin clothing or lack of... But that's another story altogether. Then there is Be'wiched out in the middle of nowhere in Surrey where one can find some of the best sandwiches in the GVRD. Another is Hilltop Cafe out in the far reaches of Langley that really should've been featured in Triple D's when Guy Fieri was in town. One other place that will be on the Food Network (You Gotta Eat Here) is Fraser Park Restaurant.

Guess what? It's located in the middle of nowhere. Well not really nowhere, but not somewhere you'd think to find a restaurant. Hidden in an industrial complex, Fraser Park serves up a mix of German, Filipino and North American food. That would be the influence of Chef Anton Heggen, with his wife Sylvia, opened the place in 1997. A bit sketch-looking outside, the group I was with were pretty skeptical. However, I assured them good eats would great them inside. Well, the inside was pretty eclectic and that didn't seem to calm anyone's nerves. Everyone reluctantly gave me their choices (you have to order at the counter) and waited to be proved wrong. It wasn't long before they were converted as the food arrived. The Clubhouse had everyone satisfied with its triple deck of goodness. With a generous portion of real turkey meat, edam cheese, multiple crispy bacon strips, lettuce and thick slices of ripe tomato, no one could finish it. A clubhouse is not a complex sandwich, but when filled with well-prepared and plentiful amount of ingredients, you have a winner (especially for $6.00!). The accompanying fries were not bad being crispy and once again, plentiful.

On the topic of plentiful, it continued with the Beef Quesadilla. It was jam-packed with tender slices of beef and cheese. Sure, it looked more like a strange burrito than a quesadilla, but we really didn't care. Once again, a whack-load of fries were served on the side which was also found with the "Ham" burger. So why did I put ham in quotations? Because there was actual ham in the hamburger. The meat patty was a blend of ham meat and spices which resulted in an interesting flavour. A bit salty and completely moist, this was more of a ham cutlet sandwich than anything. The one thing that could've been better was the bun, it was rather chewy and hard. Mrs. Spray Bottle wasn't that hungry and thought she could get away with a side order of Potato Pancakes, but boy was she wrong. She was presented with a full plate of those suckers and she could not finish. These consisted of shredded potato, carrots and onions which were fried up nice and crisp on the outside. Inside, they were fluffy and moist.

She offered some to me, but it wasn't necessary since I went for the Deluxe German Breakfast which was a plate of pure gluttony. It consisted of a 3-egg scramble consisting of peppers, onions and cheese, hashbrowns, potato pancakes, toast, bacon, cured ham and Anton's hand-made sausage. As opposed to the regular German Breakfast, the deluxe included a side of Schnitzel. When it arrived, it looked intimidating and in the end, I only finished half. The scrambled eggs were pretty fluffy with enough gooey cheesiness while the plethora of meat was quite the chore to eat. The hashbrowns were more like fried potato discs which I was quite indifferent about. I was actually a bit disappointed with the schnitzel because it was hard and dry. Despite the schnitzel, we were more than satisfied with the food especially considering the portion size and price. Definitely good value and definitely an interesting place. It's got history and character which makes the experience honest and left us wanting to return as soon as possible.

The Good:

Embers BBQ House

For awhile now, I've had my eye on a little place in Mission that appeared to be a local favourite. One problem. I don't live in Mission, Maple Ridge, Abbotsford nor Langley. Being out in Burnaby does not make it easy to get out there. However, an email by a reader urging me to visit the place and the fact I'd be out in Abbotsford made it doable. So after another visit to Castle Fun Park (my son apparently loves mini-golf and wasting money on games which only yield an eraser as a prize), we took the leisurely drive on Hwy 11 over to Mission. At first, I was wondering where my GPS was leading me. There surely wasn't a restaurant down this street right??? Well yes it was tucked away in a corner behind a motel. Despite the location, the inside is inviting and so are the friendly staff.

Unfortunately, their lunch menu does not offer their rib dinners; but we weren't that hungry anyways. We ended up going for the Heidi Baked which is not, I repeat not the waitress smoking a fatty out back... Rather it was a fire-grilled chicken breast with mayo, tarragon sauce, pickled asparagus and melted Swiss cheese on house-baked bread. Viv and I thought this sandwich was a winner. The chicken was perfectly tender with tasty grill marks. The tarragon sauce added both a richness and je ne sais quoi flavour quotient. Loved the asparagus texturally and the slight tartness. The bread did taste fresh and was crusty. The side of Potato Salad has to be one of the better ones I've had of late. With each cube of perfectly cooked red potatoes, just the right amount of dill creaminess married to the crunch of pickles, this was a tasty salad. The addition of the pickling juices afforded a nice balance to the mayo. We also shared the Pulled Pork Sandwich which was also served on same awesome stone-baked bread. Unfortunately, this was not what we had envisioned. We found the pulled pork to be chewy and stringy. The BBQ sauce was definitely leaning towards the sweeter side with a touch of smoke. The coleslaw had a nice crunch and tang; but it was too wet and made the bottom part of the bread soggy. Not a great pulled pork sandwich, we liked the Heidi much more. Strangely, the side of Coleslaw was not as wet and was very good. Nice crunch, tang and just enough mayo.

For the kiddies, we got the BBQ Chicken meal which included a choice of one side and drink (a steal at $4.49!). I sampled it and it was very flavourful throughout. It was sufficiently tender with a nice BBQ taste to it. The Fries were fresh cut and quite crispy. Loved the pepper on them. Despite the disappointing pulled pork sandwich, Embers was inexpensive enough for us to leave satisfied. Sure, the food won't blow anyone away and probably would be hard-pressed to compete with the big boys in Vancouver, but it offers up something that is not readily available out in this neck of the woods.

Big 6

"The camera pans the cocktail glass, behind a blind of plastic plants; I found the lady with the fat diamond ring. Then you know I can't remember a damn thing... " Okay, if you recognize these lyrics, then you'd know this was from Set Adrift on Memory Bliss by PM Dawn. For some reason, those words came to mind while I was brunching at Big 6 with JuJu. No, there was no lady with a fat diamond ring and I do remember what I ate, but there were Stucco walls adorned with fake plastic plants. Completing the 70's look of the place, there was vinyl booth seating complete with more plastic flowers. Brought back memories I tell ya. The only thing missing was the cigarette vending machine at the front. I guess some things have changed... Anyways, JuJu sent out a FB message asking if there were any takers for brunch and of course I volunteered. The reason we chose Big 6 was partly due to my curiousity since I drive by the place a lot and the fact someone emailed me encouraging me to try it out.

Part diner (which has never been reno'd) and part dive, this place better have good food because nobody is coming here for the ambiance. JuJu went for the 2 Egg Breakfast with Pancakes. The eggs were prepared perfectly over-easy as he requested while bacon was crisp and the sausage was fried up nicely (I think it was literally fried). However, the pancakes were not very good. They were chewy and dry. They looked nice though. For myself, I had the Eggs Benedict and it was both good and bad on one plate. First off, the eggs were poached nicely with a runny yolk. The large slices of ham (in place of back bacon) were meaty and not dry while the English muffin was crispy. I also liked the pan fried potatoes. They were crisp and golden on the outside while soft on the inside. Now for the bad news... The salty cheese-like sauce trying to pose as a Hollandaise was terrible.

While we were there, I noticed that their menu was quite large and diverse. Seeing how we only tried 2 items for breakfast, I returned on another day for a quick lunch. And when I say quick lunch, I mean less than 20 minutes. I hastily decided on the Freight-liner Burger which consisted of 2 home-made patties with 2 slices of cheese, 2 fried eggs, grilled onions, tomato and lettuce served with fresh cut fries. This behemoth could not be eaten whole and I resorted to fork and knifing it. I really liked the ripe tomatoes and crisp lettuce. Moreover, the burger patties were really moist and tender. Although I would classify them more of a steakette than burger patty. I also enjoyed the fries. Although slightly oil-logged, they were hot, crisp and potatoey.

Lastly, I really wanted to try their Chinese food and got a Sweet 'n Sour Pork & Fried Prawns Combo that came with fried rice. The rice was chewy and exhibited a great deal of wok heat with nice caramelization. They could've eased up on the salt though. Surprisingly, the sweet 'n sour pork was rock solid. The chunks of meat were moist and juicy while the sauce had a good balance of vinegar and sugar. The fried prawns were okay, they could've been crispier. As part of the combo, it included a cup of soup which appeared to be Chicken Vegetable Rice? What it actually resembled was congee with chicken and veggies. It was bland and lukewarm. Despite this, the pancakes and the Hollandaise sauce, I would return to Big 6. The prices are low, the portions are good and the service is honest. I'll just steer clear of certain items.

Here I am driving all the way to Richmond for food. What am I? A masochist? No, I just like food and will begrudgingly admit that there is no way one can avoid Richmond if you want to cover all the bases when it comes to food in the GVRD. There were many roadblocks, figuratively and literally, hindering my journey to the land of no shoulder-checking. There was a huge lineup on the approach to the Queensborough from New West, so I took a detour and headed down Marine Way. Worse. Construction limited the traffic to one-lane and ultimately, it took me an hour to get to my destination. For all that Richmond has to offer, we settled on Continental. This place has been here forever in one shape or form. One of the main reasons I chose this place is that they still have Dim Sum push carts. This form of Dim Sum service is dying a slow death and in some ways I don't miss it. However, to kick it ol' skool, we did the push cart thing in a restaurant that carried a lot of memories from my childhood.

Now, if you know me by now, you know I am very irritable when it comes to parking in Richmond strip malls. There never seems to be enough parking for the amount of businesses that operate in the plazas. And the one here is no exception. At first glance, it appeared to be a really large parking lot. A closer inspection revealed a tonne of time-limited spots that do no good when you want to sit down and eat a meal. So there I was, circling over and over again looking for that precious parking spot. I had to keep myself alert because lurking in the weeds was the ever-so-prevalent spot-stealers. You know the type - they have already driven past the exiting car by a good 10 feet and still signal while reversing to block you out of the spot. I was ready. I would not let myself be the victim. I spied a spot, clenched my teeth, hung onto the steering wheel tight and slipped in quick before I lost it. Success! And to boot, we got a window seat too! I love Richmond!

As we settled in, the first thing to pass by was the Soya-Fried Rice Noodle Rolls. Perfect, the kiddies love this. Although it was a little haphazardly plated, the noodles were not bad. Just the right amount of soy and not too greasy, this was pretty much textbook. The texture was good too being soft while still retaining some elasticity. We also got an order each of the Mushroom Rice Noodle Roll and Scallop Rice Noodle Roll. Yah, no beef nor shrimp this time. Even though I'm not exactly a vegetarian, the mushroom roll was very good. With a nice combination of shiitake, enoki and straw mushrooms, there was both texture and plenty of Earthiness hitting the palate here. It reminded me somewhat of the mushroom dumpling at The Jade, except in rice noodle form. I was only marginally okay with the scallop roll. There wasn't too much scallop and if there was a piece, it was overcooked. The texture of the rice noodle itself was a little different than that of the soya-fried noodles, it was somewhat gummier.

Of course we had to get the Haw Gow (Shrimp Dumplings) and we were fortunate to get our hands on some because with push carts, they are usually snapped up quick. These were pretty good with well-balanced textured dumpling skin that exhibited a bit of chewiness while still being very easy to eat. The shrimp was crunchy and in large pieces with little filler. The one issue we had with it was the liberal use of salt/MSG. The darn thing was salty and it killed the sweetness of the shrimp. As for the Sui Mai (Shrimp & Pork Dumpling), it was the opposite being mostly sweet. They were big though and had a good mix of shrimp, pork and shiitake mushrooms. The texture of the pork and shrimp were good having a nice snap. I only wished they would have let up on the use of pork fat. There was a tad too much. Now pork fat was not an issue with the Bean Curd Skin Rolls. There was a balanced mix of ground pork and veggies which were well-seasoned within the perfectly textured fried bean curd skin. I particularly liked the addition of compoy in the oyster-based sauce, it added a unique flavour to the dish. Another minor issue was that the rolls could of stood for more filling. They looked pretty flat and loose.

Another well-seasoned item was the Beef Meatballs. They were not very large compared to other meatballs I've had at Dim Sum lately; but texture and taste made up for the lack of size. The meat had the right "bounce" with just enough green onion. Again, I had to order one of my go-to dishes which was the Blackbean Pork Spareribs. Although there was plenty of taste, it was predominantly salty. I didn't get much garlic flavour despite seeing it. There was a slight hint of dried orange peel through all of the salt and MSG. The texture of the ribs were fine where it was marinated enough to be tender while still retaining some chewiness. However, most of the pieces were either fatty or cartilage. This could be due to the luck of the draw more than anything else.

My daughter loves congee so we decided to try their Preserved Egg & Salted Pork Congee. We didn't hold out much hope because Dim Sum congee can usually be pretty nasty without much ingredients. We were pleasantly surprised to find out not only was there a plethora of ingredients, the congee base was pretty good, albeit with MSG once again. Of course my son had to have the Shrimp Spring Rolls or I really mean the fried wheat wrapper. Well, good for him this time since the wrapper was really thick. Did they double wrap these? I mean, they were crunchy and all with lots of crunchy shrimp inside. Yet, as you can clearly see in the picture, the wheat wrapper was far too dense causing the inside to become a bit wet. Other than that, the spring rolls were fine.

Much like the haw gow, the Shrimp & Pea Shoot Dumplings were pretty good. Usually, one might find only 3 of these in a steamer at other restaurants; but there were 4 large ones here. They were filled with crunchy shrimp (which were curiously not as salty as the haw gow) mixed with good quality pea shoots. The dumpling wrapper was slightly thick in parts; yet that did not really affect the dumpling too much. Now for the offal course of the Dim Sum meal, which was the Steamed Tripe. I really liked the way they prepared it here. Each piece was a good size and the overall portion was large. The tripe did not have a gamy taste and was well-seasoned (probably too seasoned). Lots of garlic flavour with a touch of chili flakes for spice. It was very easy to chew while not being too soft at the same time. Very good. Normally, we find the Shrimp Mousse Stuffed Eggplant and Tofu as separate dishes; but it came on one large plate here. If we had known about the price, we might've thought twice about ordering it. Ignoring the cost, the tofu and eggplant were fried perfectly. Both were soft while still maintaining their structural integrity. Both had a crispy exterior; yet not being mushy inside. One thing we would have liked to see was more shrimp mousse, especially in the tofu. We got the black bean sauce on the side and it was a good thing too since we could control the saltiness of the dish (because the sauce was salty).

A dish not normally seen during Dim Sum is Pork Hock, unless it is the stewed version in vinegar and ginger. That is why I had to get it when I saw it. Unfortunately, the pork hock was not cooked long enough prior to steaming. It was very hard and most of the tendons underneath the skin were very difficult to chew and detach from the bone. Hence, the flavour penetration was lacking as well. Lots of flavour in the layer of skin; but not so much underneath. The sticky rice or Jun Gew Lo Mei Gai was already sitting at the table before I got in the door. I had originally shared one with Viv at the start of the meal and it stayed untouched for the rest. The reason? It was meh. I found the rice too wet and the pork filling to be bland. Not a very interesting nor appealing item. We didn't go for seconds. Lastly, we had to get the standard Mini-Egg Tarts for the kiddies. We were able to wrestle one from them and I split it with Viv. These were good. The tart shell was flaky and light while the egg custard was smooth and not too sweet. No wonder we almost didn't get to try them. By the end, we were pretty stuffed. We had ordered quite a bit of food. However, that didn't prepare us for the final bill of close to $100.00 before tip. Realistically, the food was pretty decent, albeit with small issues with almost everything. But due to the higher-than-we-expected pricing for this type of restaurant, the decent food suddenly became average. The push carts were a treat and so was the surprisingly attentive and friendly service.

- Hit and miss food
- Pricey in comparison to other Dim Sum restaurants of this class
- Parking lot of hell (very few unlimited time spaces)
