Big D loves Pho. So much so, he could probably have it for lunch and dinner for a whole week without blinking. So it wasn't a big surprise when he was mildly excited at my lunch suggestions for the day. His lackadaisical and indifferent attitude only meant one thing and one thing only... I had to introduce some Pho to get him on board for lunch. Luckily, I remembered that Tasty Pho had just opened up in the former location of A Taste of Asia. He immediately responded with delight to my photastic suggestion.
So with that in mind, he immediately ordered the Lemongrass Chicken and Pork Chop on Rice... Huh??? All that Pho talk for nothing... Anyways, this was a large plate of food featuring slices of pork that could've passed for beef. That wasn't a bad thing though as the meat was super moist and aggressively marinated bordering on salty. As for the chicken it was also quite sweet and salty while being sufficiently tender and charred. We also shared a Banh Mi Dac Biet which was quite average. Suffering from a lack of ingredients including pate and fish sauce, the sandwich was rather lifeless. The toasted baguette was crusty though while slightly dense.
Okay, so someone had to get the Pho right? Yes, and I to get it out of principle. The large bowl of Pho Dac Biet was nicely portioned with chewy noodles and tender slices of meat except the brisket was a touch dry and chewy. I found the broth to be rather light, yet clean with a noticeable sweetness. All-in-all, it was a satisfying visit to Tasty Pho. Nothing to get excited about, but a decent option out in Burnaby North.
The Good:
- Fairly large portions
- Clean and renovated
The Bad:
- Banh Mi needs more ingredients
- Broth lacking impact
